Catherine Mae Ritter


      Catherine Mae “Cass” “Babs” Ritter, age 93, of Harleysville, passed away on October 21, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. in Skilled Nursing at Peter Becker Community. She was the widow of Harold B. “Barb” Ritter.
      She was born January 12, 1918 in Red Hill to the late Francis K. and Ella (Miller) Wampole.
      She and her late husband owned and operated Barb & Babs Restaurant on Main Street in Harleysville from 1948 to 1980, at which time they retired and moved to Peter Becker Community. During the time they owned the restaurant, she did all the cooking and made homemade pies. She was well known for her cooking and baking. Some of the most favorite of her pies were apple, pecan and ground cherry.
      She worked in a pants factory in Red Hill upon graduation from Pennsburg High School in 1935, and after marriage in 1937, at a pants factory in Harleysville. She then worked in the Harleysville Post Office during some of WW II as a clerk. They took over the small restaurant, which “Barb's” mother owned, after she died in 1947.
      After Catherine retired, she worked for short periods of time at Hennings Store, Harleysville, where she made a lot of potato salad for the deli; and also in the kitchen at the Kaufman Restaurant in Sumneytown. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Kulpsville. 
      She is survived by her only sister, Marian Schwoyer, Red Hill; two brothers,, Ronald M. Wampole, Pennsburg and Donald M. Wampole, Walnutport. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, George W. Wampole and Francis H. Wampole.
      Relatives and friends are invited to attend her memorial service on Thursday, October 27, 11:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 2211 Mainland Road, PO Box 213, Kulpsville, PA 19443, where the family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Interment was private at Christ Lutheran Church Cemetery, Niantic.
